Expo ‘58, geplakt en gestempeld…

Vorige maand was het 50 jaar geleden dat op de Brusselse Heysel-vlakte de eerste wereldtentoonstelling van na de Tweede Wereldoorlog de deuren opende. Expo ‘58, met de sprekende titel De Toekomst begint Vandaag, was het eerste grote evenement waarop het grote publiek met de nieuwe technologische verworvenheden van de nucleaire wereld kennis kon maken.

Ook toen al draaide alles rond geld en een bezoekje aan de Expo koste de doorsnee burger al snel een pak Franken. Maar men kon deze fenomenale tentoonstelling nu eenmaal niet zonder souvenir verlaten. Allerhande prularia werden dan ook gretig aangekocht en terug naar het dorp meegenomen. Er was voor elk wat wils, gaande van heden ten dage als nogal kitscherig ervaren bierpotten over petjes, vlaggen tot pins avant la lettre. Ook aan de postzegelverzamelaars werd gedacht.

Diverse pavilioenen hadden een eigen nationaal postkantoor waar men een bijzondere stempel of de Expo-zegels van het desbetreffende land kon bekomen terwijl men op de zogenaamde Landendagen de nodige FDC’s voorzag als souvenir voor de verzamelaars.  Ter herinnering aan den Expo tonen we de komende dagen diverse souvenir-enveloppes die uitgegeven werd rond het thema Expo ‘58.

Bovenstaande enveloppe is zo’n souvenir. De Amerikaanse afvaardiging had een eigen postkantoortje in haar pavilioen, de huidige VRT-studio Het Amerikaans Theater, waar souvenirenveloppes als bovenstaande afgestempeld werden. Het pavilioen zelf is trouwens op de zegel afgebeeld.

50 Years ago, the first World’s Fair opened at the Heysel in Brussels, Belgium. It was the first time since the end of World War II that people could experience all the new inventions of the nuclear world that came into being after the war.

Even then allready, it was all about money and people hardly could left the Fair without buying a souvenir which in turn allwayst turned out te be something rather expensive. Especially compared with the low wages of the majority of the visiters, who were merely ordinary people.

For us philatelists the Fair was also something special. Belgium issued several series of propaganda stamps for the Fair and during the fair, several nations had their own postoffice in their pavillion whilst there were also so called Country Days on which special FDC cancellations were made. To commemorate Expo ‘58 we will publish during the following days some more covers and stamps all issued on the Expo ‘58 theme.

The above cover is an example of a cover form a participating nation canceled in the pavillion. The US had their own post office in their pavillion, the current Amerikaans Theater (American Theatre) TV-studio’s of the VRT, where they cancelled covers as the above featured one. The pavillion can be seen on the stamp.
